BEST LARGE RESTORATION
Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia
"...The construction of the museum, which began in 2012, had a strong positive impact on the surrounding community with a primary objective of including local and minority entities in the development process — one that mirrored the objective of the armory’s initial construction. During construction a group of 18 people received on-the-job training for the project. Black-owned businesses also played an integral role in the success of this project; 70% of the work was performed by fifteen black-owned companies. This tax credit project preserves the armory’s original façade and incorporates similar brickwork and masonry in its addition, creating a seamless transition from old to new".

"GOLDEN HAMMER"
WINNER:
BEST ADAPTIVE REUSE
Cooperage II
(Overbrook Phase II)
“…The real story of this project lies in the windows. There were no existing windows on the primary façade. Windows were necessary for the residential units, but were not allowed to be added on the historic façade. The solution to the problem was to allow the building to continue to function as a warehouse, with a village inside of it…The key to the design of the courtyard and massive skylights, which satisfied preservation requirements but created their own engineering challenges. The entire remaining rooftop houses solar panel arrays. The vintage Fir tongue and groove roof decking removed to create skylights was then reintegrated into the project’s public areas as all cladding that combines nicely with the original brick, the historic fire doors and original concrete floors and columns.
